Quiet and Steady
You may have noticed that many of our best farmers are quiet people who let their produce talk for them; that’s Jose Gonzales in a nutshell. Alcalde is where his small farm—about seven acres—and his small family (currently himself, his wife, and little Mia, who has not yet learned about quiet and steady, but give her time…) are growing. He’s been bringing a wider variety of produce each year for the past five years, and by now there are interesting differences in what he’s growing from everybody else’s; have you found the Red Finn potatoes nestled in among the little fingerlings?—look for red potatoes the size and shape of slightly lumpy flashlights and enjoy the tasty yellow flesh. Next year?—maybe corn, if Jose can expand his plantings a little.
