We need your input.

Quiet and Steady
You may have noticed that many of our best farmers are quiet people who let their produce talk for them; that’s Jose Gonzales in a nutshell. Alcalde is where his small farm—about seven acres—and his small family (currently himself, his wife, and little Mia, who has not yet learned about quiet and steady, but give her time…) are growing. He’s been bringing a wider variety of produce each year for the past five years, and by now there are interesting differences in what he’s growing from everybody else’s; have you found the Red Finn potatoes nestled in among the little fingerlings?—look for red potatoes the size and shape of slightly lumpy flashlights and enjoy the tasty yellow flesh. Next year?—maybe corn, if Jose can expand his plantings a little.

Winter Market schedule:
No indoor market in November! Gabrielle and Kelly Graham have been making things from their own lavender (they grow in Nambe) and selling them at any local markets and fairs for around seven years. They have been part of some of the very large lavender festivals happening in the state over the past several years, but the farmers’ markets are their bread and butter. Gabrielle started by making just three items, including little tins of nail butter (nice stuff, that). Now you can get lotions, spritzes, lavender wood polish, oils, and lots of other wonderful things. There are also plain lavender buds in bulk and in pretty little bags. But the most visible items are the colorful and great-smelling soaps—you just have to pick them up and give them a sniff! And then you’re hooked, of course..

Honey of a Deal The Lounsbury family having been in the honey business for quite a few years, and Brad’s Bees has been a fixture at the market for, oh, a while. Long enough for Courtney to grow up in the business, and she is now the family representative here. The honey itself comes from about 80 hives currently, stationed from the Taos area to as far south as Las Cruces (if you ever get the chance to try the cotton-blossom honey, you’re in for a real treat), though most of them are in the Espanola Valley. These are honeys with character and flavor, especially the wildflower honeys and the mesquite honey. But for the local kids, it’s all about the honey sticks, available in a wild variety of fruit, herb, and candy flavors. It’s one of those few things that a child can get at the market for just a quarter. And there is also beeswax, available for crafting, and made into beautiful candles as well. Picking a honey stick is serious business…

Remember market run every Thursday through the end of October. 7 to 1 .Please tell a friend or bring someone new to the market. Support Local farmers and their foods!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a volunteer position that takes (generally) less than an hour per month.

Here are a few pictures of early morning set up of market. We start arriving around 5am. Each market, vendors start coming into the market to set up between 5 am until 7 am. It seems like the market seems to just fall into place. But it doesn’t, it takes time to get everyone comfortably into their spots and all the tents set up along with all the produce and products, long before 7am when the customers start to come into the market. (click thumbnails to view larger).

Nose to the Old Grindstone Farmers always have dull tools (if they don’t, they aren’t working), and so do our customers. So it’s no surprise to find an itinerant sharpener on premisis. Jim Howard isn’t actually itinerant—he lives in Los Alamos—but he has his van fitted out as a shop, so he could be. He started a sharpening business when he retired in 1992, and he started coming to the market 5 or 6 years ago. The business has been Los Alamos Sharpening, but it is soon to change names, becoming High Country Sharpening. Jim can sharpen anything that’s supposed to have an edge, so bring your dull scissors, knives, and pruners along with you next time you come to market.

Ungraded Egg –Man! Ken Eggs-actly Lots of our diversified farmers bring along eggs, since chickens are a necessary part of a well-rounded small farm, but we have only one vendor who is seriously into eggs. Ken Baltz runs K J Eggs near Abiquiu, and though he, too, has had a difficult year, he’s still plugging along. Mostly his problems have been his health, but now that he’s had back surgery, he’s doing much better, and he smiles a lot more. After all, it’s hard taking care of several thousand birds when your back is hurting, so this is a vast improvement. He produces mostly chicken eggs (his mantra seems to be, “More chickens!”), but in summer there are duck eggs and turkey eggs, too. And lately he started raising rabbits as well (er, no, not for the eggs—for meat) and is currently the only purveyor of rabbit meat at any of our local markets.

Helpers, apprentices, partners, they come and go, but Phil comes back to the market every year; he says it’s because this is a great market. On ten acres in Jacona he can grow a good amount of many different varieties of vegetables, which of course change with the seasons. Right now he has his signature lettuce mix (in his signature small wading pool) and other greens, as well as melons and several peppers and chiles plus heirloom tomatoes (lots of heirloom tomatoes!). You can come talk to Phil this week and to Annette Vigil who is helping out, and you can pet Rosco, his dog.

Rainy-Day Market, September 15, 2011 Well, they can’t all be sunny and warm. But we so seldom get a rainy market that it seems a novely, and people come out to it. It’s fun to see little children in rain slickers. It’s quieter, but we manage to sell produce even in a downpour. Good thing the downpours don’t last very long…

Dave likes crusty breads of wheat or spelt; the ingredients are as local (and all organic) as he can manage, and he proudly shows off his suppliers on his info board. Her son Junior and his wife Shirley are the most constant, selling vegetables, Chimayo chile, and dried produce such as red Chimayo chile and chicos. The farm is small, about an acre in size, but it’s sincere, and though this year’s been very hard, with weather and water issues, the Martinez family keeps plugging away.

One: his real job is teaching elementary school at the Los Alamos Schools, and to judge by the number of children and parents who come to visit him at his stand, he’s a good one. Two: he has a mania for making fishing flies out of scraps of feather and thread. Okay, three: he has a little farm (seven acres, of which only one acre is covered in berry bushes) near Velarde. Luckily, this year the blackberries have done quite well, though the cherries aren’t producing that much, and even the raspberries aren’t up to their usual. Bill’s been bringing containers of three kinds of the velvety black gems, plus his blackberry jam, and that’s enough. You won’t be seeing much of Bill in person, though, as school’s in session now, but his blackberries are still here. Pictured are Bill and his helper of the day, Sierra. Hey, Bill, open your eyes!

Meet another vendor!

While the market is in full swing every Thursday, I would like to thank all of our customers for supporting local foods and local farmers. We realize you have choices and are glad that you choose to shop at the farmers market, please tell a friend or someone new to your neighborhood about the market. Thank you once again for choosing Los Alamos Farmers Market.

What’s at market this week!
Yak/Pork/Natural Beef/ Chicken/ Fowl
Ungraded eggs/ honey/ pies/ quiches Fresh Salsas/ Jams/ Vinegars/ Pickles Cheeses/ Milk/ Lavender products Knittings/ Tarts/Cookies/ Pizza/ Cookies Pot Pies/ Jellies/ Pinto beans/ Chile powder Fresh Roasted Green Chile/ Peppers Cucumbers/ Corn/ Eggplants/ Beets Turnips/ Green onions/ Carrots/ Fennel Fresh Herbs/ Artichokes/ Tomatoes Squashes & Blossoms/ Onions/ Fresh Garlic Okra/ Chard/ Mustard greens/ Head lettuce Cider/ Hot Coffee/ Scones/ Pecans
Hand tossed breads and fruit breads Jalapanos/ Yellow hot’s / Pablanos Mild Green Chile/ Beeswax candles Corn decorations/ Lavender products and more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!! all our contest winners. Next Drawing 9/15 we moved it up
by two weeks! Keep collecting those tickets.

Meet your farmer. Salvador Salvador Corona and his family have been farming locally and bringing produce to market for around fifteen years now. His farm was originally very small but has grown, now consisting of four 10-acre plots in and around Espanola. This has allowed him to expand his offerings, and last year he began growing enough sweet corn to supply the market for as long as possible; right now it’s the early white and butter-and-sugar corns. Other produce Salvador and Dolores are bringing now include summer squash, several types of cucumbers, 3-color beans, sweet and hot peppers, and onions. And squash blossoms! I remember the very first time I saw squash blossoms at the market years ago, it was he who had them, so they always remind me of him.

Something Different Though we try to keep our market on a local basis, giving preference to farmers operating between I-40 in the south and the Colorado border in the north, we do let some others in as vendors if they bring something no one else has. That’s the case with the pecans from Sanchez Farm in Roswell. Linda Farmer lives in La Mesilla near Espanola, but it is her parents who run Sanchez Farm, so Linda brings the pecans up from there. She doesn’t come very often, and she says her father is worried that next year’s crop won’t amount to much; the flower buds that will eventually produce this winter’s crop are having as much trouble due to inclement weather as our own fruit trees. So if you find Linda on any day at the market, grab some pecans while you can!

I thought this week we could enjoy pictures of his farm.
This is just some of the Chile he grow’s for Los Alamos.
He also grow peppers, lettuce of different varities, egg plants corn, fresh herbs, garlic, onions, and much more.
Please enjoy his farm pictures.

Different lettuces

Onion and Garlic and peppers and more!

Matt Romero roasting his Chiles and peppers last week.

Also at market: Honey-cheeses-milk-pastas & sauces- scones-

Estela Alcantar Family Farm

Jose Gonzales farm

Crumpackers

Farm Families

Many of the vendors at our market are family units, some large with many children and a long family history of farming. Some are small, either new couples starting out in the business or older couples whose children have gone on to the next stage of their lives. This week’s interviewees are examples of two kinds of families.

Visit the Alcantar family farms of Espanola, and you will find Estela behind her table every week, accompanied by her daughters Erica and Fatima and sometimes her husband Jose (and once in a while by her mother). Erica, by the way, is a superb English/Spanish translator, but Estela is good at conveying her meaning even when she can’t find the exact word. Estela is the sort of person who gets things done on a shoestring, and when she decided she wanted her apron to have the name of the farm, she embroidered it on the apron while at the market one day. Her produce is of course seasonal, but she works hard at presentation. Last week her French filet beans appeared, the first of the season, piled in a glorious mound (which didn’t last long). They were delicious! And when the produce is skimpy, as happened to us all early in the season, she makes sage wreaths and animals to tempt the buyers.

Dedicated Dairy Men

There are a surprising number of goat dairies in New exico, but few are as professionally run as the Old Windmill Dairy in McIntosh, near Estancia. That’s probably because instead of getting a few goats and then learning how to make cheese (as most people do), Ed and Michael Lobaugh started with a goal in mind, did the required research, scrounged for funding, and then built the dairy and bought the goats. That took years, and then it was 2007 when they achieved Grade-A status. Now, a few years further down the road, they not only make wonderful cheeses from their goat milk, but they are also venturing
into cow cheeses—try the flavored cream cheeses! Oh, and the mozzarella! And if you have a yen to make your own cheese, you can take classes at the dairy, too.

Ed is also selling Milk at market don’t forget to pick up a gallon or half.

That thing is the noble scone. In that time they have taken their wares, marketed under the name “Z Best Scones,” to farmers market from Taos to Los Alamos. For a while they also ran a small coffee house near their Taos home, but after Frank got to explore the World of Cardiac Rehab,
they decided to simplify things and just do the markets. Their scones come in many varieties, though they are typically made with wheat and spelt from northern NM, and the fruit is bought from fellow vendors whenever possible. Nancy’s wish for this year is for more fruit (not happening this year), plus
she wishes somebody would perfect a chocolate-chip-bearing tree.

For a while Gayle ran a tea room out of her home, which became locally quite famous, but also became more work than she had anticipated, so this year she didn’t reopen it; it’ll be missed. But that means she can spend more time growing her flowers and herbs and turning a lot of Ron’s produce into unusual jams and jellies (if you’ve never tried corncob jelly, you need to) and herbal vinegars. Ron grows everything he can on two acres, plus he has a small greenhouse to try to get a jump on the season with. The farm is certified Organic, by the way!

This week at market we will have everything from peas, squash, salad greens, pecans meats, breads, pastries, honey, cider plants, to mention just a few things.

Next drawing will take place on July 21st

A while back one of the groups that played at the market, Coco and Lafe from Vermont, listed the Los Alamos farmers market on their blog. Following are excerpts from their blog entry about our market. You can check out Coco and Lafe on the web.

Last week we played markets in Los Alamos and Taos, New Mexico, plus Midwest City and Edmond, Oklahoma. We also performed live on KRSN in Los Alamos and KTAO in Taos. We played a house concert at the amazing JC's Funky Hair Ranch in Edmond and wrote a couple more songs. Fun, busy week.

Cindy Talamantes, the manager of the Los Alamos Farmer's Market, is a whirling dervish, moving from one vendor spot to the next during setup, making sure everything was weighted down against strong winds and that everyone had what they needed. She made us feel very welcome, and has collected some great vendors.

Eight people approached us when they saw our Vermont license plate. All 8 were either from Vermont or had lived there at one time.

Regina Rafferty grew up in Fairlee, Vermont and knows some of the same people we do! Regina is moving to Los Alamos.

The Intergalactic Bread Company
Amy & Todd started this company 10 years ago. They make Mediterranean style bread from all local ingredients that they get from other farms. Recipes change based on what's fresh and available. Amy: "I love seeing little kids tear into our stuff." They attend three markets per week, and educate people that meals SHOULD change with the seasons. Skip tomatoes in January if you live in Los Alamos. They gave us breakfast and lunch ,My favorite was the German Apple Cake. Exquisite flavors and wonderful texture.

3 Farms, 3 Acres, and primarily a one man grower. Eat your heart out Superman.

Jesus Guzman Farms produces a variety of Chiles, Corn, Cucumbers and much more. He also enlightened me on the ancient and labor intensive production of 'Orno Corn'. You strip the corn off the cob, throw it in an Horno oven (you've seen them: they're like those chimney ovens you put in your backyard) overnight, which dries and smokes it. To rehydrate, you simply throw it in a pot with beans for sweet, smokey flavor.

Jesus delivers to Chico's Restaurant, but primarily sells direct at three markets. Kate says she helps "a little". I loved meeting them both. Jesus says one of his favorite reasons for coming to market is the new methods he learns from other farmers.

Turkeys, Pheasants, Chickens, Geese, Peacocks: feathers everywhere.

Barb is the "plant department", Wendy is the bird department. Wendy makes fans & jewelry, Barb loves talking to customers. "We spend so much time talking to the plants we gotta get out."

Barbara Mann, speaks Plantish

*KRSN is the heritage Radio Station for Los Alamos and was born as part of the Manhattan Project in 1945. Owned by David and Gillian Sutton, they are community activists and love living there with their three children.

We played a few songs on 'The Live Morning Show" with Dave and Nancy. They asked great questions, we had a lot of laughs (it was too early for Margaritas), and they loved Lilla. Nancy is a hoot. You can listen to them live on the web: http://www.krsnam1490.com

We drove through the smoke on the way to Oklahoma, but that's another blog. Thanks to all of the above and the many more we didn't have room to mention.

Lab Officials Monitoring Winds, Fire Progress

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico June 27, 2011 Los Alamos National Laboratory emergency officials are closely watching wind directions this morning as the Las Conchas fire continues to burn southwest of the Lab.

Winds generally from the northwest overnight have helped keep the fire from entering Lab property, but forecasts call for a change by mid-day. LANL’s Emergency Operations Center remains operational.

Observation aircraft are currently conducting aerial surveys to gauge the fire’s growth and current size. Overnight, as a precaution, the Lab cut natural gas to technical areas in LANL’s remote southwest area. All hazardous and radioactive materials remain accounted for and are appropriately protected, as are key Lab facilities such as its proton accelerator and supercomputing centers.

Environmental specialists are mobilized and monitoring air quality, but say the principal concern is smoke.

The Lab last night announced it would be closed Monday. “It’s been a very long night for the fire crews,” said Lab Director Charles McMillan. “There has been an outpouring of support from the region, the state, and the federal government and for that we are profoundly grateful.”

A Loaf of Bread…Intergalactic Breads
We have four bakers at the Los Alamos Farmers’ Market, which is a lot for a small market. But
they are quite different from each other, so customers can find a variety of baked goods here.
We’ll check out the other three later; this week the spotlight is on Intergalactic Breads.
Amy Quirke is Intergalactic Breads. She’s been bringing her rustic artisanal breads to market for
about ten years, which is a long time to be patting bread into shape. She also now has a bakery
located in Santa Fe. Her specialty is flat breads resembling large Danish rolls in shape but not in
ingredients. This is a hearty, folksy dough, stuffed with unusual fillings. Some are sweet—the
apple elderberry one is fabulous—while others are savory (you should try the mixed greens
version with its garlic bite, or the mushroom and onion one), and the ingredients change with
the growing season as some disappear and others come on the scene. Amy also makes loaves
of unstuffed bread, and don’t forget to try the German coffeecake muffins for breakfast!
Amy Quirke
Well that’s everyone except Matt Romero He missed last week but I sure he’ll be back this week.

This spring hasn’t been an easy one, but nonetheless Joel Daeschel is bringing a delectable array of plants to whet the planting desires of any gardener. Joel deals primarily in color, glorious in-your-face color that convinces even the most careful buyer that “Oh, I need that!” So even though there are small herb and vegetable plants down in front, it’s the mounds of glowing roses, lilies, salvias, annuals and perennials, that draw people as if they were busy pollinators
.
Where do all these happy plants come from? Joel has several greenhouses located between the
hamlets of Stanley and Cedargrove out in the plains east of the East Mountains, to which he commutes daily from his family’s home in Eldorado. It’s a long hike, for sure, and even more so from there to Los Alamos. But Los Alamos has lots of serious gardeners, so it’s a trip worth taking each week. His daughter Micaela frequently comes along when she is not in school, and once in a while we get to see his wife Marie as well. Joel will have plants available as
long as people want them, and until the end of planting season in September we will have a beautiful and changing color spot every week at the market.

Recipe from the kitchen of Joy Robertshaw

Yak Chuck Eye Steak Tamales!!!!!!!

Cut meat into cubes and sauté in olive oil with 2 sliced leeks and 2 cloves of garlic, sliced or crushed.

Add:
1 teaspoon of cumin powder
2 teaspoon of dried oregano
2 teaspoon of red chile powder
1 can of hatch green chili enchilada sauce
1 small can of hatch green chile
25 oz Lucini Spicy Tuscan tomatoes

Combine all in a slow cooker and cook 6 to 8 hours.
Puree the sauce in a cuisinart and add to the meat to keep moist.
Soak corn husks over night.
Make tamale dough and place in frig overnight. At room temp spread tamale dough on corn husk and add about 1 teaspoon of the meat mixture in the center then roll and either fold up ends or tie.

Tamale Dough;
1 ½ cups of Masa Harina 3 teaspoons of soft butter
¾ teaspoon of baking powder ¾ teaspoon of Redmond salt
¾ cups plus 3 tablespoons of yak broth
one third cup of solid vegetable shortening

Mix dry ingredients together:
In another bowl beat shortening & butter together until fluffy and creamy. Gradually add Masa Harina mixture alternating with 3 tablespoons of broth until light and fluffy. Mix about 5 minutes in a mixer. Small balls of mix should be able to float in water! Then Steam according to Masa package. If none I steam them for 20 to 25 minutes and serve hot. I can smell them now!!!!!!!!
